What:
The Positive Action Family Kit provides practical guidelines and effective tools to improve parenting skills and promote positive thoughts, actions, and feelings about oneself and within families. The kit contains a manual with multi-age, 15-minute lessons, colorful materials such as an ICU (I See You Doing Something Positive) Box, “Word of the Week” cards, Conflict Resolution Plans, games, posters, and songs to make lessons interesting and memorable.

Who:
All types of families (traditional, non-traditional, single-parent, adopted, foster), schools, communities, health and welfare service providers, counselors, and other family service providers employ Positive Action to bring success and happiness to the home. High-need, at-risk families, those in court-mandated situations, and families in a school or other group will benefit.

Family Classes

  • Family conflict reduced by 9%
  • Family cohesion improved by 7%
  • Parent/child bonding improved by 10%

Why:
An effective and supportive family is a strong predictor of the academic success and physical, intellectual, social, and emotional health of individuals, families, and society. Positive Action involves parents in a positive way in their children’s lives. The kit provides many tools to foster effective families and enable supportive parents, resulting in the proven outcomes shown above.

Where:
Across the nation, Positive Action is being used in homes and schools and by community agencies and family service providers (justice, mental health, welfare, and others) to strengthen families.

When:
Positive Action family materials target every life stage from infancy and childhood to adolescence and adulthood. It is never too early or late to apply the concepts, but they are best learned sooner rather than later!

How:
The Family Kit is extremely user-friendly. The 15-minute lessons easily fit into busy families’ schedules, bringing Positive Action concepts to the home and providing a link to the sponsoring school or agency. After reviewing the Introduction to the Family Kit, parents will understand the concepts and materials. Then they can get started by scheduling a time for one or more lessons a week or by following a timetable set by the sponsor.

The countless ways for parents and families to get involved with other Positive Action components include:

  • K–12 Instruction Curriculum: Participate in materials sent home and volunteer to help in classrooms.
  • Climate Development Kits: Attend assemblies, Positive Action Days, and other activities.
  • PA Committee: Represent parents and participate in program implementation.
  • Community Kit: Participate in activities and develop links between school, families, and communities.
